Excellent condition. £2500 Separately published. - “In 1660 the district water board of the drainage sluices in Kennemerland and
West-Friesland ("Uytwaterende Sluysen in Kennemerlant en West-Frieslant") ordered the surveyor Johannes Dou (1615-1682) to make a general map of its territory in the northern half of the province of Holland. After a preparation of twenty years, Dou completed his assignment with the presentation of a huge map of the water district in sixteen sheets. In 1682 he delivered a copy of this map in four sheets, as well as a copy in one sheet. All three versions of the map were engraved by Koenraat Decker (1651-1709), an apprentice of Romeyn de
Hooghe, and Abraham Deur, though their names are only mentioned on the map in sixteen sheets. Hameleers records the numerous states of the copperplates for these maps, issued both separately and as a set of three maps. They are all equally rare. Although the topographical contents of the maps never changed, there are small differences in the coats of arms of the gouvernors of the district water board on the different states” [Information supplied by A. The set of two maps £1250 Separately published, based on the five sheet map of the river by Placide de Sainte Helene, published in Paris in 1704. - The War of the Spanish Succession was fought between the French and Spanish who wanted Philip of Anjou, grandson of the French King, to ascend to the Spanish throne, and the British, the Dutch and the Holy Roman Empire who feared the union of the French and Spanish crown and instead wanted Archduke Charles Of Austria, cousin of the recently deceased king of Spain to be his successor. The war began with the invasion of Lombardy in 1701 by the Austrians, and culminated with the complete defeat of the Franco-Spanish forces by 1707. The set of six maps £6000 Probably separately published. - The first two maps are identical, covering the whole area around St. Petersburg and Kareliya, Gulf of Finland, Lake Ladoga, and Ingermanland to the south, with all text in Latin/German on the first and in Russian on the second map (59 x 46 cm each). The next four maps are dedicated to the Ladoga Channel from St. Petersburg to Novaya Ladoga: the Lacus Ladoga et Sinus Finnicus map showing the complete length of the canal (45 x 64 cm), the following three showing the different sections from the Gulf of Finland and Kronstadt to St. Petersburg (46 x 61 cm), from St. Petersburg just to the beginning of Lake Ladoga at Schlüsselburg (45 x 60 cm), and from there along the southern coast of Lake Ladoga to Novaya Ladoga on the mouth of the River Volkhov (44 x 64 cm). Mundi, Vol. 12, 1955: The map is printed from the original plate of the first ever map printed and published in the Russian language by Jan Tessing in Amsterdam after the Russian Major General
Mengden. The original map is very rare and included the dates 1699 and 7207 (= from the creation of the world). The plate passed later to the publishers Ottens in Amsterdam. They erased the Russian dedications and titles and replaced them with French text. The dates were altered to 1736 and 7243 respectively. - Like many Ottens maps, this one was published separately and then assembled to order into a composite atlas.
